Holding tank

A septic tank is a container installed on a boat that collects wastewater from the toilet. It prevents wastewater from being discharged directly into the sea, which is illegal in many waterways and harmful to the environment. A septic tank is an important part of a boat's sanitation system and helps keep waterways clean. Discover our selection!

A holding tank is a basic piece of equipment for a responsible boater.

The primary purpose of a septic tank is to prevent the direct discharge of wastewater into the sea. Wastewater discharged directly into a watercourse increases eutrophication and deteriorates water quality. Wastewater contains nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen, which promote the growth of algae and reduce the oxygen content of the water. In addition, wastewater can spread bacteria and viruses, which is harmful to both aquatic organisms and humans. As boating becomes more popular, the environmental impact is becoming even more pronounced, and the septic tank is a key part of a boat's sanitation system. It helps protect sensitive waterways and marine life from the effects of humans and boating.

A septic tank can withstand wave motion, temperature fluctuations and constant humidity. Its function is to store wastewater safely until it can be properly emptied at a port's septic tank discharge station . In many countries and regions, such as the Baltic Sea and Finnish inland waters, discharging wastewater directly into the water is prohibited, and a septic tank is a legal requirement.

Using a septic tank not only complies with environmental regulations, but also improves boating comfort. An odorless septic system makes even long trips more pleasant, and many modern boats already have a septic tank as standard equipment. By choosing and using an appropriate septic tank, boaters take responsibility for the environment and ensure that boating is safe and comfortable for everyone.

How does a holding tank work?

The operation of a septic tank is based on collecting wastewater in a closed container, enabling environmentally friendly and legally compliant wastewater treatment. The septic tank system is simple but effective.

  • Wastewater collection: When the boat toilet is flushed, the wastewater is transported to the septic tank through a hose system. The hoses are made of odor-proof and durable materials to withstand salt water and continuous use without leaks or odors. The boat toilet can be either a manual pump toilet or an electric toilet , which effectively flushes wastewater into the septic tank. Some systems also have a backflow preventer, which prevents wastewater from flowing back into the toilet.

  • Storage: Wastewater is stored in a septic tank. It may have several compartments to separate solid and liquid waste and reduce odors. The tank often has a vent or pipe to allow for odor control and equalization of air pressure. This is important to prevent leaks or overpressure in the tank that can cause odors. The vent pipe leads out of the boat, usually through the sump or deck, effectively removing odors.

  • Drainage: Wastewater can be drained from a septic tank by either suction drainage or a manual pump system. Suction drainage is usually done at a port drainage station, where the septic tank drain connection is connected to the station's suction device. This is a quick and easy way to drain the septic tank. Some systems also have a manual drain pump to allow for emptying at sea (if permitted). A manual pump requires more effort from the operator, but is a useful backup system in situations where a port drainage station is not available.

Some modern septic tanks have sensors that display the level of the septic tank . Maintenance and regular cleaning of the septic tank are essential for efficient operation. Using septic tank cleaning agents and taking care to check the hoses and valves will ensure that the system works flawlessly and odor-free for a long time.

What types of holding tanks are there?

There are many types of holding tanks for different purposes and boats, and choosing the right tank depends on the size of the boat, the amount of use, and your own needs. Here are the most common types of septic tanks and their features:

  • Fixed holding tank for boat :
Fixed septic tanks are permanently installed on a boat, often under the toilet, seat pan or other structure. They are most common on larger boats and sailboats where there is space for a fixed installation. The capacity can vary from small (20-50 liters) to large (100-200 liters) depending on the need. Fixed septic tanks are reliable and easy to use, as they are connected directly to the boat's toilet system and ventilation. However, they require careful installation and regular maintenance to keep the hoses, valves and drain mechanisms in good condition.

  • Portable holding tank for boat :
Portable septic tanks are smaller and lighter containers that can be easily removed and emptied in ports. They are suitable for smaller boats where the installation of a fixed tank is not possible. Portable septic tanks are often portable and their capacity varies between 5 and 30 liters. They are a cheap and convenient solution, but their capacity is limited, which can be a challenge on longer voyages or with a larger crew.

  • Hard and soft-structured tanks :

    • Hard plastic tanks are durable, long-lasting and easy to maintain. They are usually made of polyethylene, which is highly resistant to salt water, chemicals and mechanical stress. Hard-structured septic tanks retain their shape and do not flex with the movements of the boat, making them reliable even in challenging conditions.

    • Soft septic tanks (e.g. rubber tanks) are more flexible and easier to install in tight spaces where installing a fixed tank would be difficult. Soft tanks conform to the boat's structure, but they are not as durable as hard tanks and may require more frequent maintenance and inspections.

  • Septic tank with manual pump for boat :
Septic tanks equipped with a hand pump allow you to empty your own wastewater if a suction and discharge station is not available. This is especially useful on longer trips or in the open sea, if emptying is permitted. A hand pump works mechanically without electricity, but it requires the user to manually pump, which can be laborious for larger tanks.

Other features and accessories of holding tanks:

  • Sensors : Some septic tanks are equipped with fill level sensors.

  • Ventilation systems : Help control odors and prevent pressure build-up in the tank.

  • Odor-proof hoses : Ensure that sewage odors do not enter the boat.

  • Drain valves and connectors : Enable easy and quick draining at ports.

When choosing a septic tank, it is worth considering the size of the boat, sailing areas and usage. The right septic tank makes boating more comfortable, environmentally friendly and carefree. Explore our selection and find the septic tank that is right for your boat!
