Boat fuel tanks and fuel tanks

Fuel tanks and gas cans are important equipment when operating a motorized boat or other recreational vehicle. Choosing the right fuel tank, using it properly, and maintaining it properly are important factors not only for safety, but also for engine performance and fuel efficiency. Fuel tanks also include fuel tanks and jerry cans.

What is a fuel tank?

A fuel tank is a container in which fuel, such as gasoline or diesel, is stored for use in an engine. Fuel tanks used in boating can be:

  • Fixed tanks that are part of the boat's structure and are usually attached to the outboard or inboard engine (often called a fuel tank).

  • Portable fuel tanks that are lightweight and easily portable.

Fuel tanks are used to ensure the engine has a fuel supply, but they can also be used to store extra fuel for a long journey or in an emergency.

Are a fuel tank and a fuel reservoir the same thing?

Fuel tank and fuel tank often mean the same thing, but there may be slight differences in their meaning and usage depending on the context.

  • Fuel tank is a more general term that encompasses both fixed and portable tanks, gas cans, and jerry cans. It is used to refer to any container designed to store and supply fuel to an engine.

  • A fuel tank usually refers to a fixed container mounted to the boat's structure. Fixed fuel tanks are common on larger boats with higher fuel needs, and are often connected to fuel lines and gauges to facilitate fuel usage and monitoring.

Practical differences
  • Fuel tank:

    • Often a lightweight and portable container, gas can or jerry can.

    • Especially suitable for small boats with an external outboard motor.

    • Allows easy filling and transportation of fuel.

  • Fuel tank:

    • Typically high capacity.

    • Permanently installed and part of the boat's infrastructure.

    • A common choice for inboard motor boats.

What is a gas can and what is it needed for?

A fuel can (also known as a jerry can) is a portable fuel container used for transporting, storing, and pouring fuel. In boating, a fuel can is useful in the following situations:

  1. Carrying additional fuel:

    • On long boat trips, a gas canister allows you to store extra fuel, which is especially important in remote areas where there are no gas stations nearby.

  2. Emergencies:

    • If the fixed fuel tank runs out unexpectedly, the gas canister acts as a backup tank, helping you get back to port safely.

  3. Fuel filling:

    • When the boat's fuel tank is difficult to reach or the distance from the gas station to the boat is long, a gas can makes it easier to transfer fuel.

Is a gas can and a jerry can the same thing?

A gas can and a jerry can mean practically the same thing. A jerry can is a term used specifically for sturdy gas cans, often made of metal. However, nowadays a jerry can can also be made of plastic. (Read more about the origin of the jerry can name here .)

  • Jerry can: Usually more durable and designed for larger capacities. Often made of metal, but modern jerry cans can also be made of HDPE (high-density polyethylene) plastic.

  • Gasoline can: A broader term that can refer to lighter plastic or metal cans.

What are the differences between gas cans?

Gasoline canisters differ from each other based on their characteristics:

  1. Fuel canister material:

    • Plastic: Lightweight, rustproof, and generally less expensive. Suitable for a wide range of typical needs. An easy-to-handle alternative for transporting and storing gasoline.

    • Metal: Durable and long-lasting, but heavier and more prone to rusting without proper coating. The traditional material for making jerry cans.

  2. Volume:

    • Gasoline cans are available from small, 5-liter models to large, 20-liter or even larger containers.

  3. Design:

    • Jerry cans are usually rectangular and thick-walled to ensure durability.

    • Some canister models are designed specifically for boating in terms of design and usability.

  4. Dumping system:

    • Some gas cans have a built-in pouring spout, which makes transferring fuel cleaner.

    • Other gas can models may require a separate funnel.

What kind of fuel tank should I choose?

The choice of fuel tank depends on the size of your boat, its intended use, and engine consumption.

1. Fuel tank type:

  • Fixed fuel tank :

    • Suitable for larger boats with space to permanently install a fuel tank.

    • Reduces the need to transport excess fuel in gas cans.

    • Suitable for long journeys where a large amount of fuel is required.

  • Portable fuel tank :

    • Suitable for smaller boats, such as rowing boats, outboard motors and small motorboats.

    • Easy to fill at the gas station and transfer to the boat.

2. Fuel tank capacity:

  • Choose the tank size based on the engine's fuel consumption and the length of the trip.

    • For smaller boats, a 10–25 liter tank is sufficient.

    • For larger boats, a capacity of more than 50 liters may be required.

3. Material:

  • Plastic fuel tank:

    • Lightweight, easily portable and corrosion resistant.

    • Well suited for boating, especially in conditions involving salt water.

  • Metal container:

    • Durable and long-lasting, but heavier and can rust unless made of stainless steel. Jerry cans have traditionally been made of metal, but plastic is now preferred for the reasons mentioned above.

4. Special features:

  • A fuel gauge, pump, air vents, and filters can increase operating comfort and safety.

How do I clean a fuel tank, fuel tank or petrol can?

Regular cleaning of fuel tanks and gas cans is important, as dirt and water can create nasty engine problems. Clean the fuel tank as follows:

  1. Empty the tank:

    • Remove any remaining fuel. Use a fuel pump if necessary.

  2. Rinse:

    • Rinse the tank with a fuel-friendly cleaner or a mixture containing a small amount of gasoline.

  3. Remove deposits:

    • Use a soft brush or towel to clean the walls of the fuel tank. For metal tanks, check for rust.

  4. Dry the tank:

    • Allow the container to dry thoroughly before use. If necessary, use compressed air to speed up drying.

  5. Check filters:

    • Change the tank filters regularly to prevent dirt and other contaminants from entering the engine's fuel system.
