Outboard oils and outboard oil changes

Outboard motor oil is a lubricant designed for outboard motors, which protects the engine from wear, reduces friction and ensures efficient operation of the engine. Outboard motor oil for 4-stroke and 2-stroke outboard motors differs from regular engine oils in its composition and properties. Choose oils approved by your outboard motor manufacturer and check out our selection!

Outboard motor oil for 4-stroke engines

Outboard motor oil for 4-stroke engines meets the requirements of 4-stroke outboard motors. It protects the 4-stroke engine from wear, overheating and corrosion, ensuring efficient and long-lasting engine operation. Unlike 2-stroke engine oil, outboard motor oil for 4-stroke engines circulates in the engine in a separate lubrication system without mixing with the fuel.

Properties and composition

  1. High temperature resistance: Outboard motor oil for 4-stroke engines is exposed to higher temperatures, so the oil is designed to maintain its lubricating properties under heavy loads.

  2. Corrosion prevention: Four-stroke outboard motors often operate in humid or salty environments, so 4-stroke outboard motor oil contains additives that prevent corrosion and rusting.

  3. Cleaning properties: 4-stroke outboard motor oil keeps the internal parts of the engine clean by collecting dirt, residue and particles.

  4. Viscosity: Four-stroke engine oil has a stable viscosity, meaning it remains the correct thickness both during cold starts and when running warm.

Types of 4-stroke outboard engine oil

Outboard engine oil for 4-stroke engines is selected taking into account the oil's viscosity and classification:

1. Viscosity

  • SAE Ratings: Common 4-stroke outboard oil options include SAE 10W-30 and SAE 10W-40.

    • 10W-30: Suitable for most conditions where temperatures are not extreme.

    • 10W-40: A better choice if the engine is constantly exposed to heavy use or high temperatures.

2. API classifications

  • The API classification (e.g. SL, SM or SN) indicates the quality and additive content of the oil.

    • Use oil with a rating that meets the engine manufacturer's requirements.

3. Brand-specific oils

  • Many engine manufacturers, such as Yamaha, Honda, Mercury or Suzuki, offer their own 4-stroke outboard oils that are optimized for their engines, and their use may be recommended during the warranty period.

Why is choosing the right 4-stroke outboard oil important?

The choice of 4-stroke outboard engine oil has a direct impact on engine performance and durability:

  • Better protection: High-quality oil reduces wear on engine parts such as pistons, valves and crankshaft.

  • More efficient operation: The right oil helps your engine operate optimally, improving fuel efficiency and performance.

  • Corrosion prevention: Salt water and moisture are significant risk factors for outboard motors, but the right oil prevents their effects.

Outboard motor oil for 4-stroke engines is designed to withstand the challenging conditions of boating. Always choose the oil recommended by the engine manufacturer, maintain your engine regularly, and use oil of the correct viscosity and quality classification. This will ensure a long and reliable engine life.

Outboard engine oil change

Changing your outboard oil is an important maintenance procedure that ensures the long life and efficient operation of your engine. Changing the outboard oil on a 4-stroke outboard is a relatively simple process that can be completed using the following steps.

Required tools

  • New outboard oil with 4-stroke compatibility (type recommended by the manufacturer, e.g. SAE 10W-30 or SAE 10W-40).

  • New oil filter (if your engine has one).

  • Oil drain pan.

  • Funnel.

  • Oil change wrench or universal wrench (for removing the filter).

  • Clean cloths or paper towels.

  • Protective gloves.

1. Preparations before changing the outboard oil

  1. Check instructions: Refer to the outboard motor's owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommendations for oil type and amount, as well as instructions for changing the outboard motor's oil.

  2. Position the boat correctly: If the motor is attached to the boat, make sure the boat is balanced. If the motor is removable, place it on an outboard motor mount .

  3. Warm up the engine: Run the engine for a few minutes to warm up and fluidize the oil. This will make changing the oil in your outboard easier.

2. Draining the oil

  1. Turn off the engine: Make sure the engine is turned off and has cooled down slightly.

  2. Remove the oil filler cap: Remove the oil filler cap to allow air to circulate and the outboard oil to drain out more easily.

  3. Place the drain pan: Place the oil drain pan under or next to the engine, near the drain valve.

  4. Open the drain valve: Loosen and remove the drain plug or valve. Allow the old outboard oil to drain completely into a container. Be careful not to make a mess – collect the oil carefully.

3. Oil filter replacement (if the engine has a filter)

  1. Remove the filter: Use an oil change wrench or universal wrench to remove the filter.

  2. Check the gasket: Make sure the old gasket comes off with the filter. If not, remove it manually.

  3. Prepare the new filter: Lightly lubricate the sealing ring of the new filter with new oil. This will make installation easier and prevent leaks.

  4. Install the new filter: Screw the new filter into place firmly, but avoid overtightening.

4. Adding new oil

  1. Add 4-stroke outboard oil: Use a funnel and pour the manufacturer's recommended amount of new oil into the engine. Be careful not to overfill.

  2. Check the level: Use the dipstick to check that the oil level is at the correct level. Add if necessary.

  3. Close the filler cap: Tighten the oil filler cap firmly.

5. Start and check the engine

  1. Start the engine: Run the engine for a few minutes to circulate the new 4-stroke outboard oil through the system.

  2. Turn off the engine: Let the engine cool down for a while and check the oil level on the dipstick. Add oil if necessary.

6. Finishing the outboard oil change and waste disposal

  1. Clean the engine: Wipe any oil stains from the engine and the surrounding area.

  2. Dispose of old outboard oil and filter: Take the used oil and oil filter to a recycling center or service center that handles hazardous waste.

  3. Mark maintenance: Record your oil changes so you know when the next change is due.

Tips for a successful outboard oil change

  • Always use the oil and filter recommended by the manufacturer.

  • Do not overtighten the oil filter; turning it by hand is sufficient.

  • If you are not sure about the correct amount of oil, add it a little at a time and check the dipstick regularly.

  • Perform oil changes regularly, usually at the beginning of the season and during the season if necessary.

With these instructions, changing your outboard engine oil is easy and your engine will stay in good condition!
