Sailing jacket for boating: How do you choose the best one for sailing?

A good sailing jacket is one of the most important basic pieces of equipment for a sailor. A good sailing jacket will protect you from the elements and keep you comfortable during long sailing days, whether it's a casual day on the water or a competitive regatta. At the bottom of the page you'll find a buyer's guide to choosing the right sailing jacket.

Why is a good sailing jacket important?

A good sailing jacket is not just a stylish piece of clothing, it is specifically designed to protect the boater from various weather conditions. At sea, conditions can change quickly: a sunny day can turn into rain and gusts of wind in an instant. A quality sailing jacket will keep you dry and warm, which significantly improves comfort and safety on the water.

Sailing involves a lot of movement, so the jacket needs to be breathable and flexible. A well-designed sailing jacket allows for freedom of movement. In addition, many jacket models have practical features such as pockets, reflectors and adjustable cuffs, which increase comfort.

A sailing jacket is also a safety feature. Waterproofness and visibility are important, especially in bad weather or in an emergency. Bright colors and reflective details help other boaters or rescue teams see you better. Don't forget your life jackets too!

A good sailing jacket will stand the test of time and wear. It is a long-term investment that will pay for itself over the years by providing continued protection and comfort in all situations at sea.

Materials and their properties

Even for sailing, the choice of materials plays a key role in its functionality and durability. Different materials offer different benefits, so it is important to understand their properties before making a purchasing decision.

The most commonly used materials in sailing jackets are technical fabrics such as Gore-Tex, eVent and other similar membranes. These materials combine waterproofness and breathability, making them an excellent choice for variable weather conditions. Gore-Tex is particularly well-known for its ability to keep water out while allowing moisture to evaporate from the inside, preventing the discomfort caused by sweating. Check out the Gore-Tex cleaning guide !

Durability is an important factor in material selection. Sailing jackets are often exposed to harsh wear, salt water and UV radiation. Because of these challenges, many jackets are made from reinforced nylon or polyester fabrics that are highly durable and retain their properties for a long time. Some models also use ripstop fabric to prevent tears from spreading.

Thermal insulation may be necessary in colder conditions when sailing. In this case, synthetic or natural insulation materials such as Primaloft or down can be added to the jacket. Synthetic insulation retains heat even when wet, while down offers an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio in dry conditions.

A good lining improves comfort against the skin and helps to effectively manage moisture. Many quality sailing jackets use soft microfiber linings or mesh fabric to improve ventilation and reduce friction.

Weather resistance and waterproofness

Weather resistance and waterproofing are two of the most important features for sailing. At sea, weather conditions can change quickly, so a jacket must be able to protect the wearer from both rain and wind. A waterproof jacket will keep you dry, which is essential for both comfort and health.

The water column rating of technical materials used in sailing jackets indicates how much water the fabric can withstand before leaking. Good quality sailing jackets usually have water column ratings of at least 10,000 mm, but the best models can exceed 20,000 mm.

Seam sealing is another important factor in ensuring waterproofness. Taped seams prevent water from entering the jacket through the seams. In quality sailing jackets, all seams are taped or otherwise reinforced, which significantly increases their ability to keep water out.

Wind and weather resistance are closely related to waterproofness. A good sailing jacket also protects against strong winds and cold drafts. Many jackets have adjustable cuffs, hems and collars to help keep the cold air out and the warmth in.

Weather resistance is enhanced by various additional features such as storm hoods and high collars. The storm hood provides additional protection for the face and head during heavy rain, while the high collar prevents wind from reaching the neck and throat.

Breathability and comfort

Breathability is almost as important as waterproofness when sailing. A breathable jacket lets moisture produced by the body escape, preventing discomfort caused by sweating and keeping you comfortable even during active movement.

Breathability is often measured by the RET value (Resistance to Evaporative Heat Transfer), which tells you how well a material lets moisture through. The lower the RET value, the better the breathability. In quality sailing jackets, this value is usually below 13, which means good or excellent breathability.

Comfort is also affected by the cut and fit of the jacket. A well-designed sailing jacket allows you to move freely without restrictions. Ergonomic cuts and flexible materials significantly improve comfort. Many models have adjustable parts such as cuffs, hems and waists, which allow you to adjust the jacket to fit you exactly.

The materials on the inside play a big role in comfort. Soft linings like microfiber or mesh feel nice against the skin and help manage moisture effectively. Some jackets also have ventilation holes, such as underarm vents, to further improve ventilation.

Helly Hansen sailing jackets are a favorite choice for many

Helly Hansen sailing jackets are one of the most well-known and respected brands in the world of sailing clothing. The company was founded in Norway in 1877 and has been a pioneer in the development of technical outdoor clothing ever since. Helly Hansen sailing jackets are particularly popular among boaters due to their quality, functionality and innovative features.

One of Helly Hansen's biggest strengths is their Helly Tech® technology. This three-layer membrane combines excellent waterproofing and breathability, making the jackets ideal for variable weather conditions. Helly Tech® materials keep you dry from outside water while allowing moisture produced by the body to evaporate.

Helly Hansen sailing jackets also have a wealth of practical features that improve comfort and safety on the water. Many models have adjustable storm hoods, high collars and taped seams for maximum protection. In addition, the placement of pockets and closure mechanisms are carefully considered: the zippers are waterproof and the pockets are easily accessible without opening the jacket.

Helly Hansen's ergonomic cuts and flexible materials allow for freedom of movement in all situations. The soft linings on the inside feel comfortable against the skin, and the jacket does not chafe or cause discomfort even after prolonged use. Safety features such as reflectors are standard on most models.
