Trim tabs level out a boat's running attitude, cut fuel consumption and improve ride comfort in chop.
What trim tabs do
Trim tabs are plates mounted on both sides of the transom that, when adjusted, level out the bow-up attitude a boat takes on plane. Properly adjusted trim tabs improve visibility, reduce pounding in chop, and can lower fuel consumption thanks to a flatter running attitude.
When trim tabs are worth installing
Trim tabs are most useful on heavily loaded boats, in rough chop, or when a boat is slow to get on plane. They don't replace the engine's own trim, but complement it - especially for correcting side-to-side list.
Choosing size and type
Trim tab size should match the boat's size, weight and hull shape. See trim tabs and cylinders and trim kit brackets and accessories to find the parts you need for installation.
Using them on the water
Trim tabs are adjusted from the helm with an electric switch while underway. To correct side-to-side list, raise or lower one tab more than the other; to level the bow-up attitude, adjust both tabs symmetrically.
Summary
• Trim tabs level out a boat's running attitude and can improve fuel economy.
• Size the tabs to the boat's size and weight.
• Use the tabs to fine-tune list and bow rise, alongside the engine's own trim.
