A Grill for Your Boat – How to Choose the Best Boat Grill

A grill for your boat is a summer boater's best investment for cooking on the water. A model designed for marine use differs significantly from an ordinary backyard grill: it has to withstand salt water, wind, vibration, and the motion caused by waves. A gas grill for your boat is the most popular solution thanks to its ease of use and safety, but compact charcoal models also suit the water well. This guide covers choosing, mounting, safety, and maintenance, so cooking succeeds safely and enjoyably.

Check out Marinekauppa's boat grill range and find the model that suits your needs.

Gas or charcoal grill for your boat?

The first decision is fuel type. A gas grill for your boat is by far the most popular option, since it lights quickly, the flame goes out immediately after use, and temperature can be adjusted steplessly. A charcoal model, meanwhile, offers a traditional smoky aroma, but needs more care and deck space. The comparison below helps you understand the key differences.

For most boaters, a gas model is the most practical choice. It produces no ash or sparks, and after use the unit is quickly out of the way. A charcoal-fired option can suit better if you mainly cruise the archipelago and want a traditional flavor experience when going ashore.

Gas grill for a boat – features and selection criteria

A gas grill for a boat is designed to withstand the specific challenges of marine conditions. A quality boat grill is made of corrosion-resistant stainless steel (grade 304), and its burner is wind-protected. Choice is guided by the vessel's size, available space, and how you want to mount the unit.

Marine-use models typically use two different gas sources: small CV270/CV470 cartridges, or the vessel's own LPG system. Cartridge-fed units suit occasional cooking and small vessels, while a unit connected to a fixed gas system best serves regular use on larger boats. You'll find the needed gas accessories for both options at Marinekauppa.

Wind resistance and burner protection

Wind is cooking's biggest challenge on the water. An unprotected flame goes out easily even in a moderate wind, interrupting cooking and wasting gas. Quality marine-designed models, such as the Magma Marine series, use a radiant heating panel and convection technology, which eliminate the risk of an open flame going out entirely. CADAC, meanwhile, uses Turbo burner technology, where the burners sit low and removable windscreens provide extra protection.

In marine use, wind resistance is the number-one priority. In offshore conditions, a windscreen alone isn't enough – the burner's construction itself must withstand wind. An infrared burner or a radiant panel are the most reliable solutions.

Popular boat grill models compared

Marine-designed options are available from several manufacturers. Below are three popular models representing different types of solutions:

The Magma Original Marine is designed specifically for marine use: its balanced lid won't fling open in waves, and 304 steel withstands salt water year after year. The CADAC Safari Chef 30 Compact is an excellent choice if you want a compact, versatile unit, since the included pot, grate, and dome enable versatile cooking. The SAfire Roaster suits those who appreciate traditional charcoal-cooked flavor, since its unique construction allows two hours of cooking with just 300 grams of charcoal. Boat grill mounting and placement

A boat grill must be mounted securely, since the motion caused by waves can tip over a poorly placed unit. The mounting method depends on the model and the vessel's structure.

Rail mounting is the most popular method. Clamps typically fit rail tubing 22 to 32 millimeters in diameter and lock the unit securely in place. Several mounting options are available for Magma models: a basic clamp, a quick-release clamp, and different tube and rail sizes. Separate table stands are also available if you want to cook on a flat surface. The needed clamps and stands are in our galley accessories range.

When choosing a location, consider the following: the unit needs to be in a spot sheltered from wind, but far enough from sails, biminis, and other flammable materials. The stern rail is generally the safest location. Also make sure heat and grease splatter from cooking don't damage the varnish or gelcoat on surfaces.

Safety when grilling on a boat

Cooking over an open flame on the water requires special care. The enclosed structure and limited space make fire safety paramount. A gas grill is safer than a charcoal model, but gas use also carries risks that need managing.

The most important safety rules:

Use the unit only on deck in an open space, never inside the cabin or under a bimini

Check gas hoses and connections for leaks before every use

Keep a fire extinguisher within reach while cooking

Shut off the unit and close the gas valve as soon as the food is ready

Never leave cooking unattended, since wave motion can shift food or tip over a grease container

Store gas bottles in a ventilated space, out of direct sunlight

When using LPG, a gas alarm is highly recommended safety equipment. LPG is heavier than air and collects at the bottom of the vessel, where it can form an explosive mixture unnoticed. The alarm is placed 15 to 30 centimeters above the floor and no more than 4 meters from the gas appliance. Read more about fire safety in our fire extinguisher guide.

Boat grill cleaning and maintenance

Salt water, moisture, and marine weather wear down cooking equipment faster than an equivalent backyard tool. Regular maintenance considerably extends service life.

Clean the grate after every use, while it's still warm. Use a brush or a damp cloth. Stainless steel parts can be washed with mild soapy water, but avoid strong chlorine-based cleaners, since they can damage the steel's surface. CADAC models' GreenGrill ceramic coatings clean especially easily and are non-stick.

At the end of the boating season, let the unit dry thoroughly before winter storage. Remove the gas cartridge or hose, clean the burner openings of any small blockages, and protect the unit with a cover or store it in a carry bag somewhere dry. Custom-fit covers are available for Magma models, protecting against UV radiation and moisture all season.

Frequently asked questions about boat grills

What's the best grill for a boat?

The best choice depends on your needs. For regular use and demanding conditions, Magma Marine is the most reliable option with its 304 stainless steel construction and wind-resistant burner. For occasional use, the CADAC Safari Chef or 2 Cook Pro are excellent compact options. If you want traditional charcoal-cooked flavor, the SAfire Roaster stays cool on the outside and is safe to use on deck.

Can I use a regular home grill on the water?

An ordinary backyard model isn't recommended for marine use. Devices designed for home use don't withstand salt water, their materials corrode quickly, and they won't stay in place in waves. Marine-designed models are made of corrosion-resistant materials, have wind-protected burners, and can be mounted securely to a rail or a separate stand.

How much gas does a boat grill use?

Gas consumption varies by model and use. Typical consumption is 130 to 160 grams per hour. One 227-gram gas cartridge cooks for about one and a half to two hours, plenty for one meal. CADAC's Turbo burner technology can reduce consumption by up to 40% compared with traditional burners.

Does a boat grill need a gas alarm?

A gas alarm isn't legally mandatory, but it's a highly recommended item whenever LPG is used on board. Especially on units connected to a fixed gas system, an alarm is practically essential, since a leak can create an explosion risk indoors.

How is a boat grill mounted on the rail?

Rail clamps are either manufacturer-supplied or separately purchased mounting systems that lock onto the rail tube. The most common rail sizes are 22 to 25 millimeters and 28 to 32 millimeters. The clamp typically has a screw mechanism that clamps around the tube. Both basic and quick-release clamps are available for Magma models, and CADAC's Kuuma series has its own clamps. Check your own rail size before ordering.
