A boat's water system is a package consisting of a fresh water tank, a pressure pump, plumbing, faucets, and a wastewater system. A working water system makes nights spent at a dock or anchor comfortable – but a poorly maintained system can ruin an entire trip with a leaking hose or a clogged pump. How does a boat's pressure water system work?
A pressure water system works on a simple principle: when a faucet is opened, system pressure drops below a set threshold (typically 1.5–2 bar), which switches on the electric water pump via a pressure switch. The pump draws water from the tank through the hose to the faucet and shuts off automatically when the faucet is closed and pressure recovers.
The most common electric water pumps have a flow rate of 9–20 liters per minute and run on 12V or 24V. Recommended fuse sizes range from 10–15 amps depending on the model. Jabsco Par-Max and Whale Watermaster are popular models: they're quiet, durable, and tolerate running dry.
An accumulator tank is an often-underused but important component: it evens out pressure pulses and reduces the pump's start-stop cycles, which significantly extends the pump's service life.

Fresh water tank – capacity, materials, and installation
A fresh water tank is sized based on the number of users and trip length. A practical rule of thumb: allow about 5–10 liters per person per day for basic use (drinking, cooking, dishwashing). Showering raises consumption to 15–20 liters per person per day.
Food-grade HDPE plastic (high-density polyethylene) is the most common and recommended tank material. It's non-toxic, withstands salt water and chemical stress, and doesn't affect the water's taste. Avoid plastic tanks without CE marking for food contact use.
The tank is usually installed at the bow or integrated with the keel structure for weight-distribution reasons. The fill fitting exits through the deck, where it's easy to fill at the dock. The tank has a vent line that prevents a vacuum from forming while pumping.
Plumbing, fittings, and faucets
The material of a boat's water hoses is a critical factor: always use food-grade approved hoses free of phthalates or other harmful substances. The most common diameters are 13mm (1/2") for cold water lines and 19mm (3/4") for the supply line to a marine toilet.
The Whale System 15 is a popular quick-connect fitting system that allows fast installation without special tools. Maximum pressure is 6 bar / 65°C for hot water and 12 bar / 20°C for cold. Hose clamps are the traditional fastening method: they're reliable but need periodic torque checks, since salt water and temperature swings can loosen connections.
Boat faucets are mainly made of chrome-plated brass. Brass withstands the marine environment well. Combination faucets intended for salt water have a dual channel so fresh water doesn't mix with seawater.
Marine toilet and wastewater system
A boat's sanitation system consists of a toilet, a holding tank, and the hoses connecting them. In the Baltic Sea and Finnish inland waters, discharging sewage directly into the water is largely prohibited under environmental legislation, so a holding tank is effectively mandatory equipment for a boat intended for overnight stays.
Manual pump toilets are simple and long-lasting – they only need occasional seal maintenance. Electric toilets are more comfortable but draw power (typically 4–8 A / 12V per flush) and require more maintenance.
The holding tank is emptied at pump-out stations in marinas via suction. Electric macerator pumps make the emptying process easier; their typical capacity is 15–18 liters per minute. A macerator pump's service life with proper maintenance is 5–10 years.
Bilge system – managing moisture in the bottom of the boat
The bilge system ensures water collecting in the bottom of the boat – from rain, condensation, or small leaks – is removed automatically. An electric bilge pump switches on via a float switch when the water level rises above a set threshold.
Bilge pump capacity is sized to the boat: small boats are fine with 800–1,100 l/h, while larger sailboats are recommended at least 2,000–3,500 l/h. Always also install a manual backup bilge pump for power outages – it's also a legally required safety item.
A boat's hot water system
Hot water can be produced on a boat in three ways: an electric-element water heater (boiler), a heat exchanger connected to the engine, or a gas-fired unit. The heat exchanger is the most energy-efficient option: it uses heat released from the engine's cooling water and, in practice, produces hot water for free while underway.
An electric boiler's size is typically 6–20 liters. A 6-liter boiler is enough for one person's wash; a 20-liter one stores enough water for two people's showers. Power draw is 250–800W depending on the model.
An engine-connected water heater is by far the most energy-efficient solution for an active boater – on a long passage it effectively runs at zero cost.
The most common faults in a boat's water system
Boat water system maintenance – annual tasks
A boat's water system requires regular maintenance to stay hygienic and reliable. Recommended annual maintenance tasks:
Check all hoses for mechanical damage, hardening, and cracks – especially exterior hoses exposed to UV
Clean the filter cartridge or replace it – at least once at the start of the season
Disinfect the entire fresh water system: drain the tank nearly empty, fill with a weak sodium hypochlorite solution (1 dl bleach per 10 liters of water), let sit for 30 minutes, rinse thoroughly
Check the pump diaphragm and pressure switch's condition – worn seals can cause leaks
Check the accumulator tank's diaphragm by releasing pressure: the correct pre-charge is 0.5–1.4 bar before the pump pressurizes
Check the holding tank's hoses, valves, and drain fitting – lubricating with seal oil keeps valves moving freely
Winterizing a boat's water system
Winterizing is the single most critical task – freeze damage can crack the tank, hoses, and pump housing within a few hours. Winterize before the temperature drops below freezing:
Drain the fresh water tank as thoroughly as possible. Use the manual pump to remove residual water.
Run the pump dry by activating it briefly at each faucet until air comes out.
Pour propylene glycol (food-grade antifreeze) into every line and faucet, about 0.5–1 dl per faucet. Propylene glycol is safe in drinking water plumbing, unlike ethylene glycol.
Take care of the holding tank system: empty the tank at a pump-out station, then add a cleaning agent and antifreeze mixture to the tank to prevent bacterial growth over winter.
Open valves in the water lines so any remaining water can expand without building pressure.
Propylene glycol is sold as antifreeze intended for boating use, and generally protects down to about -20°C depending on the mixing ratio. Check your product's protection rating before winter.
Upgrading and modernizing a boat's water system
Old water plumbing is often worth replacing entirely at once with the Whale System 15 quick-connect system, designed for marine use and fast installation. Replacing the entire system on a 6-meter boat takes an experienced installer about a day, and supplies cost €200–500 depending on boat size and the number of faucets.

If the boat has no hot water system at all, adding a heat exchanger to the engine's cooling system is an efficient investment. It uses the engine's heat and produces 6–20 liters of hot water with no extra power draw while underway.
