Yanmar oils – original maintenance fluids for diesel engines

In the Yanmar oils product group you will find original Yanmar branded maintenance fluids: Yanmar Premium Diesel engine oil with 15W-40 viscosity (in 1L and 5L packages), synthetic ATF gear oil, SAE30 gear oil and Saildrive 80W-90 gear oil specially designed for saildrive drives. Yanmar is known for its reliable diesel inboard engines in sailboats and motorboats, and the original oils are formulated specifically to meet the requirements of these engines.

15W-40 engine oil is suitable for a wide temperature range and is the most common choice for basic Yanmar diesel engine maintenance, while Saildrive gear oil is its own separate product – the saildrive drive is a separate component from a traditional sterndrive and has its own seal- and material-compatible oils that should not be mixed with regular gear oil.

Change the engine oil and filter at the manufacturer’s recommended intervals, typically once a season or after a certain number of operating hours, and check the transmission oil level regularly for leaks. Always use the correct grade of oil for your engine model year and power unit – the wrong viscosity or specification can shorten the engine’s life in the long run.

Yanmar diesel engines often use a separate transmission from the actual engine, and SAE30 transmission oil is specifically designed for this separate component – ??never mix engine and transmission oils, as their additives and viscosity properties are designed for different applications. ATF synthetic transmission oil is suitable for certain automatic transmission-type systems found in some Yanmar models.

Always check the exact model of your engine and transmission before ordering oil, as the Yanmar range covers a wide range of inboard engines for different boat types, and the wrong oil grade can impair the operation of the transmission or shorten its service life. Keep the opened oil container tightly closed, as the oil can absorb moisture from the air during long-term storage.

Yanmar oil grades are specifically designed for marine use, where the engine is exposed to different conditions compared to a land-based diesel engine – this makes the original oil a reasonable choice, even if a general-purpose diesel oil could technically be suitable for the engine. Store oil cans in an upright position to avoid leaks.

The package sizes of Yanmar oils (1L and 5L) allow for both a single oil change and the purchase of a larger stock for several maintenance sessions at once.

When changing the oil, it is always a good idea to also change the oil filter, even if you only change the oil at regular intervals according to the engine's recommendations.
