D-shackles

D-shackles are a basic sailing fastener, with a D-shaped body that distributes the load evenly in different directions — making them a reliable choice for mooring points where the load may vary in direction. The range includes stainless steel D-shackles in several sizes: a basic 16 mm model, a flat 5 mm model in two different products, and Harken's own D-shackles from 10 mm (H2122, H2123) to 12 mm (H2126, H2127) with several locking mechanism options.
The choice of shackle size is based on the load on the attachment point — a smaller 5 mm flat shackle is suitable for light applications such as attaching small sails or equipment, while a 12 mm Harken shackle can withstand significantly higher loads, such as when attaching a mainsail or genoa. Stainless steel is highly resistant to seawater without any special surface treatment, making D-shackles a long-lasting investment.
The type of locking mechanism (for example, a screw-in pin or a spring-loaded lock) affects how quickly the shackle can be opened and closed during use — for racing, a quick-release model may be advantageous, while a sturdier, screw-in version is suitable for more permanent fastenings.
The choice of D-shackle locking mechanism affects the speed and safety of use — a screw-in pin is a traditional, reliable solution for more permanent attachments, while a spring-loaded or other quick-release lock is better suited for applications where the shackle must be opened and closed frequently during sailing. When choosing a size, it is always a good idea to leave a safety margin for the actual load, as sudden jerks, for example when the sail is unexpectedly inflated, can momentarily multiply the force applied to the shackle compared to a steady sailing load. The flat 5 mm model is well suited for lighter applications such as attaching small flags or light equipment, where the weight and size of a large D-shackle would be unnecessary. The quality of stainless steel varies between manufacturers — Harken shackles are made of particularly corrosion-resistant steel, which is especially important for those sailing in saltwater, where the shackles are constantly exposed to both salt and UV radiation.
It is worth checking the condition of the shackle's locking pin regularly, as a worn pin can loosen and cause the shackle to open during use.
The correct shackle size and locking mechanism ensure safe and reliable fastening regardless of the intended use.
Regular inspection and proper use of shackles ensure safe sailing in all weather conditions.
D-shackles are a versatile basic part that can be found on almost every sailboat at various mooring points.
