Engine compartment fans — safety and humidity control

In the Fans product group, you will find electric fans intended for ventilating the engine compartment and other enclosed spaces of a boat: Attwood's Turbo 3000 (3") and Turbo 4000 models, Vetus' electric fan, and Seaflo's engine compartment fans of various sizes (76 mm and 102 mm, in both 12V and 24V versions). Engine compartment ventilation is not only a convenience factor but often a safety issue — especially in gasoline-powered engines, accumulated fuel vapors must be vented out before starting the engine to avoid the risk of explosion and ignition.

The Seaflo range offers the widest range of sizes and voltages, making it a flexible choice for a variety of boat types and electrical systems — 24V models are suitable for boats with larger electrical systems, while 12V is the most common choice for smaller and mid-sized powerboats. Attwood's Turbo series is known for its efficient ventilation in a relatively compact size, and the Vetus model fits naturally with other Vetus engine room equipment.

The power and size of the fan should be sized according to the size of the engine compartment — a fan that is too small will not change the air quickly enough in a large space, while an oversized fan will consume unnecessary electricity and may be noisier than necessary.

We recommend that you always install the fan as part of your engine start-up routine — run the fan for a few minutes before starting and check the fan system regularly, as a clogged or damaged fan will not fulfill its safety function.

In a gas-powered galley (see our product group Stoves), the importance of ventilation is even more important, as even a gas leak in the galley can collect heavy gases in the lowest spaces without proper ventilation — many boat models benefit from a separate bilge or galley fan in addition to the engine compartment fan. Consider a fan with a timer or automation if you want to ensure that ventilation always starts before the engine starts without relying on human memory.

Clean the fan's protective grille regularly from dust and debris, as a clogged grille significantly reduces airflow even if the engine itself is still working properly.
