Piano hinge or single hinge?
A piano hinge (continuous hinge) runs across the entire edge of the hatch or deck in one long piece, distributing the load evenly along the entire length and is a particularly durable solution for larger, heavier hatches – Roca piano hinges are supplied in two-metre rolls from which the hinge is cut to the appropriate length. Individual hinges are suitable for smaller applications, such as cupboard doors or small hatches, where a full-length piano hinge would be an oversized solution. Stainless steel is the only sensible material choice in a boating environment, as standard steel rusts quickly in salty air and can stain the surrounding surface. A stepped hinge is designed for applications where there is a height difference between the deck and hatch, where a standard flat hinge would not close tightly. Always measure the required width and length of the hinge accurately before ordering, and also check the hole spacing if you are replacing an old hinge – models from different manufacturers are not always directly compatible with each other.
Roca is known for its high-quality, precisely manufactured hinges, whose joint structure can withstand repeated opening and closing without loosening over years of use – this is especially important for frequently used hatches, such as engine compartments or under-deck storage areas. Before replacing an old hinge, it is worth accurately measuring both the width of the hinge and the hole spacing, as even a small deviation can make installation difficult without drilling new holes.
The stepped hinge is a special feature that is not always found elsewhere in the general range – thanks to it, the height difference between the deck and the hatch does not prevent tight closure, which is a typical problem in older or self-built boat structures.
