Zinc anode for protecting metal parts of a boat

A zinc anode protects the iron and other metal parts of a boat from corrosion. The anode is installed below the waterline in the areas that you want to protect. It acts as a sacrificial metal and prevents damage to more valuable parts.

Corrosion occurs electrochemically when different metals are in contact with each other in water. The metals then form an electrical pair, with the baser metal corroding first. Zinc is a baser metal than iron, stainless steel, copper and brass, so it corrodes instead of them.
