A broken fastener or pin is a common wear and tear defect that should be repaired immediately to ensure the oar stays securely in place while paddling.

An aluminum paddle is a lighter and more durable alternative to a traditional wooden paddle — it doesn't rot or require maintenance, and is well suited as a backup paddle or primary paddle in a smaller inflatable boat where weight is a concern for transportation and handling.

Check the condition of your oar regularly, especially for cracks in the blade and bends in the shaft after prolonged use — a damaged oar can break just when you need it most, for example when the engine is off. Always keep an oar with you in your inflatable boat as a backup system in case of engine failure, even if you are not rowing normally.

Transport and store the oars protected, for example in their own bag, to prevent the sharp blade from getting damaged or damaging other parts of the boat during transport — this will significantly extend the life of the oars compared to loose storage.

Compare different oar materials according to your needs — a wooden oar is traditional and affordable, but aluminum is lighter and maintenance-free, making it better suited for occasional backup use in addition to a motor.

Check the oar attachment mechanism regularly, as salt water and constant use can cause stiffness or wear in moving parts over time.

Compare the grip of the handle of different oar models with and without gloves, as a good grip is important for long-term rowing.
