Railing cables – mantook cables and accessories for boat railings

Guardrails, or mantookes, are an important part of the railing structures of sailboats and other boats. They run between the railing posts and form an edge wire on the boat deck that increases safety. A properly installed and appropriately tensioned mantooke helps prevent falls when moving around on deck and also acts as part of a neat and functional railing structure on the boat.

Railing cables are made of materials suitable for boating use, which are resistant to moisture, seawater and continuous outdoor use. In addition to the mantooki cable, the railing system usually requires various fastening, termination and tensioning parts, which allow the cable to be securely installed between the railing posts and the boat's structures.

Selection and installation of a mantooki wire

When choosing a railing wire, it is worth checking the diameter, length and compatibility of the wire with existing fasteners and terminals. If replacing an old railing wire with a new one, the easiest way to determine the appropriate size is to measure the diameter of the old wire and check the terminals in use.

The mantooki wire must be sufficiently taut to provide support when moving on the deck, but the tension must not unnecessarily load the railing posts or their attachments. Suitable tensioners and end fittings are used to tighten the railing wire, which can be used to adjust the tension of the wire correctly.

Railing wire ends, joints and accessories

The functionality of a handrail wire depends not only on the wire itself but also on its connections. Handrail wire ropes are equipped with various end pieces, fastening fittings and clamps that are used to secure the wire to a handrail post or other structure. The right ends make the structure sturdy and finished and reduce the risk of injury from sharp wire ends.

When choosing accessories, make sure they are suitable for the diameter of the wire rope you are using and the type of fastening you are using. An incorrectly sized end or clamp can weaken the connection or make it difficult to tighten the wire rope properly.

Check the railing cables regularly

It is a good idea to check the railing cables and their attachments at least at the beginning of the boating season and whenever the railing has received a strong impact or load. Check in particular the strands of the cable, end pieces, tensioners and railing post attachments.

Broken strands, obvious bends or heavily worn connections should not be ignored. The mantooki cable is a safety-critical part of the boat's railing structure, so a worn cable or damaged end should be replaced before the next use.
