Although modern plotters and GPS systems are commonplace, route planning drawn on a paper map is still an important skill and a backup system in case the electronics fail — an experienced boater can always plot a course and measure distance from a map without a power-hungry device. A navigation triangle and ruler allow for accurate compass heading transfer from the map to the helm, while a harpoon measures distances according to the scale of the map.

The one-handed harp is designed specifically for the deck of a moving boat: it can be used with one hand while the other hand holds the support handle or steering wheel — the all-brass model withstands marine climates well and does not rust, while the lighter Linex model is a more affordable basic option for more occasional use.

Mastering these basic tools is an important part of basic maritime training, and it is recommended to keep them on board at all times, regardless of how advanced the electronics are — the battery may run out, but a paper map and harpoon will always work.

Store navigational equipment in a dry, protected place after use — brass harpoons won't rust, but other instruments can be damaged by moisture if stored for long periods. Practice using basic tools in calm conditions beforehand so you'll have the skills even if your electronics fail mid-trip.

Always combine traditional navigational aids with a compass as a complete backup system — a ruler and a harp alone without a reliable compass are not enough to safely determine a course if all electronics are out of order.

Always keep your navigation equipment in the same, dry storage location, for example in the chart case — this way you can find it quickly when needed and it won't get lost among other items on the boat over a long period of time.

Compare the material of the harp and ruler according to the frequency of use — brass is best suited to continuous marine use without the risk of rusting in the long term.

Check the clarity of the scale on measuring instruments at regular intervals, as worn markings can make it difficult to read accurately.
