In the shore power sockets and connectors section, you will find the sockets and connectors needed to connect the boat's shore power system: Smart Living's CEE socket, Marinco's plastic 16A socket, Ratio Electric's 16A power sockets in stainless steel, and single and double-position wall sockets for various installation needs.

What should you consider when choosing connectors in a shore power system?

The shore power connection allows the boat to be connected to a 230 volt electrical network in the harbor or on the pier, allowing the boat's batteries to be charged and electrical devices to be used without a generator or inverter. Since the connection is outdoors and exposed to moisture, it is important to use CEE standard sockets and plugs specifically designed for marine use or at least for damp areas, and designed to withstand repeated plugging and unplugging outdoors.

The current rating of the socket and plug (for example 16A) should be selected according to the needs of the boat's electrical system - too low amperage can cause overheating if the boat has many electrical devices in use at the same time. Stainless steel plugs are more resistant to seawater than standard plastic alternatives, which is especially important for connections that are constantly outdoors.

A flush-mounted socket is suitable for neat, fixed installations, while a surface-mounted model is quicker to replace later and better suited for retrofitting to an older boat. A dual-socket socket is convenient if the boat needs multiple simultaneous connections, for example a charger and an additional heater at the same time.

Electrical safety regulations must always be followed during installation, and in uncertain situations it is advisable to use a professional – an incorrectly installed or wrong type of shore power connection is a significant fire safety risk.

It is also worth checking that the socket you are using and the shore power cable you are connecting to are of the same standard - in Europe, the most common standard for boating is the blue CEE plug, but different ports and countries may use slightly different connector types, so an adapter may be necessary when visiting another country along the way.

Before connecting, it is a good idea to visually check the condition of both the boat's own socket and the dock's plug - a cracked housing or visible moisture damage is a sign that the part should be replaced before use for safety reasons, as a faulty connector can cause a short circuit or electric shock hazard.

Always keep the socket closed with a protective cover when not in use to prevent moisture and dirt from accumulating on the contacts and impairing electrical conductivity in the long term.
