What does SOLAS approval mean in practice?

SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) is an international maritime safety agreement, and the MED (Marine Equipment Directive) marking indicates that the lifejacket has passed the strict EU tests for buoyancy, visibility and reliability – this is a much more comprehensive requirement than a standard consumer lifejacket.

The 165 newton buoyancy is designed to safely carry the user even in heavy clothing and waves, turning even an unconscious person onto their back to keep the airway above the water surface – this is a significantly higher buoyancy value than lighter recreational lifejackets.

A SOLAS life jacket designed for professional use is often a little more robust and expensive than a standard leisure life jacket, but the investment is justified in situations where real safety and meeting regulatory requirements are paramount.

The storage method also affects the reliability of the vest: keep the vest in a dry, well-ventilated place and never compress it under other items for a long time, as constant compression can damage the firing mechanism and slow down the deployment in an emergency.

It is advisable to carefully match the size and strap system to the user's size - a vest that is too loose can slip out of place in the water, reducing its effectiveness just when it is needed most in a rescue situation.

Always check the life jacket's last service date before a long trip and replace the gas cartridge as soon as necessary to ensure that the life jacket is ready for use throughout the sailing season and there are no surprises in a dangerous situation at sea.

Always compare the weight and comfort of the vest for long-term use, as in professional use the vest may be worn for several hours continuously.
