In the Ropes and Threads department you will find thin, multi-purpose ropes and threads that are not actually sailing or mooring ropes but are constantly needed on a boat for small tying, marking and repair work. The selection especially covers Robline's thin Dyneema and polyester ropes with hand reels, such as the Ocean 3000 Dyneema rope and Mini-Reels series products, as well as Orion 500 polyester ropes in several colors and Gottifredi Maffioli Dyneema thread for the smallest, strongest bindings.
What are ropes and threads used for on a boat?
Thin Dyneema rope is suitable for tying the boom of a sail, securing bulk cargo on deck, as a spare mini rope for key rings or fishing equipment, and for many small maintenance jobs where a full-size rope would be oversized. Polyester rope, on the other hand, stretches less than nylon and is resistant to sunlight, so it works as a material for flag ropes, marking ropes, or fastening lightweight sailing equipment. Flag cloth rope is designed specifically for fastening pennants and flags so that it does not rub or break in the sun.
In practice, the difference is primarily in the material: Dyneema is light, very strong and almost inelastic, so it is best suited for small load-bearing lashings and backup use. Polyester is cheaper and slightly more flexible, which makes it more comfortable to handle in repeated lashing and unlashing tasks. Spool sizes vary from a few meters to 25–30 meter spools, so there is a suitable package size for both a single repair and the entire season's needs.
When choosing a rope or thread, first consider the intended use: a light marking rope does not need the same strength as a rope used to tie down items on deck. A thickness of 1–2 mm is sufficient for most light tasks, while a rope of 3–4.5 mm can withstand even heavier loads. Also check the color coding – for example, the different colored Orion 500 ropes make it easier to distinguish between different uses on the boat, as each task has its own recognizable color.
A hand reel is a practical way to store line on a boat: the Mini-Reels type reel keeps the line organized and prevents it from getting tangled up among other accessories, and it is easy to cut the required length directly from the reel at the point of use. This is especially useful when the line is intended for many small tasks during the season and not for one one-time tying. Gottifredi Maffioli's thinnest Dyneema thread is also suitable for sewing sail corner reinforcements or other precision repairs where regular line would be too thick to handle. Store line reels in a dry place out of season, as prolonged exposure to moisture can weaken the strength of even synthetic fibers over time.
