Zinc anode for protecting boat metal parts

A zinc anode protects the iron and other metal parts of a boat from corrosion. The anode is installed below the waterline on the objects that you want to protect. The zinc anode acts as a so-called sacrificial metal and is intentionally consumed instead of the metal parts that are to be protected.

How does a zinc anode work?

Corrosion occurs electrochemically when different metals are in contact with each other under water. The metals then act like an electric battery, with water connecting the terminals. In this reaction, the baser metal corrodes first.

Zinc is a more base metal than, for example:

• Iron

• Stainless steel

• Copper

• Brass

This allows the zinc anode to effectively protect these materials from corrosion.

Inspection and maintenance

• Zinc anodes should be checked every time the boat is lifted.

• The anode should be replaced immediately if it is clearly worn.

Installation instructions

• The zinc anode is installed longitudinally in connection with the metal parts to be protected.

• The zinc anode must not be painted with boat primer.

• The shaft anode is attached to the propeller shaft as close as possible to the shaft support.

A properly installed and timely replaced zinc anode is one of the most important ways to prevent damage to the metal parts of a boat and extend their service life.
