The Ice Fishing Sensors for Winter Fishing range covers sensors from the most popular sonar brands for placing in a hole drilled in the ice or in the ice. The Lowrance range offers several connection types for different device generations: PTI-WSU 83/200 kHz black Uniplug connector, PTI-WBL blue 7-pin connector, Hook2 4X's own 6-pin sensor, as well as a universal sensor for Reveal/Hook2/Eagle series devices and a separate 9-pin model for older devices. Raymarine offers an ice fishing sensor designed for Element HV devices and a separate 30 cm power cable for ice fishing.

An ice fishing transducer differs from a boat-mounted transducer in that it is designed to hang freely in the water without a fixed mounting bracket, and often comes with a floating or weighted body to hold the transducer in place in icy water. Choosing the right transducer depends on the model of sonar or chartplotter you are using — the connection type and frequency must be checked against your specific model to ensure the transducer will work properly.

For winter fishing, the frequency range of the sensor (typically 83/200 kHz) is sufficient to detect both the bottom profile and schools of fish and individual fish under the ice. Many models also display water temperature, which helps to estimate the likely depth of fish in cold water.

It is crucial to check the connection type of your ice fishing transducer before ordering, as Lowrance and other manufacturers use several different connector standards depending on the generation — 6-pin, 7-pin, and 9-pin connectors are not compatible with each other, and ordering the wrong transducer means unnecessary returns. The frequency of the transducer (typically 83/200 kHz) affects how accurately the device distinguishes individual fish from each other and the structure of the bottom: a higher frequency provides more accurate resolution in shallow water, while a lower frequency carries better at deeper depths. The floating or weighted body of an ice fishing transducer is designed to remain upright under the ice without a separate support structure, which is different from a transducer that is permanently mounted on the boat. For winter fishing, it is worth choosing the length of the transducer cable so that it is well between the thickness of the ice and the location of the display — a cable that is too short will limit the placement of the display, while excess cable can always be coiled to a suitable length. Raymarine's Element series ice fishing sensor and its matching short power cable are specially designed to be lightweight and easy to carry on ice fishing trips.

It is a good idea to check the sensor cable for kinks and abrasions before every ice fishing trip, as the cold makes the cable insulation more fragile.
