Which navigation lights does a boat need?

According to the Finnish boating guide Suomi veneilee, it is dangerous and illegal to drive in the dark without lights. The requirements depend on the type and length of the boat:

  • A rowing boat or a sailing boat under 7 metres must have a white light ready: an electric torch or a lit lantern.
  • An open motorboat under 7 metres may show an all-round white light if sidelights cannot be fitted to the hull.
  • A motorboat under 12 metres may replace its two sidelights with a single light with coloured sectors.
  • Under sail, a boat under 20 metres shows sidelights and a stern light. A sailing boat under 12 metres may replace them with a combined light at the masthead.
  • When a sailing boat is using its auxiliary engine, it also shows a masthead light.

Choose the light by type

LED lights use little power: for example, the Hella Marine Naviled PRO Trio combination light uses less than 3.5 W (0.29 A / 12 V), is IP67-rated and internationally approved (BSH, IMO COLREG, USCG, ABYC). The Attwood LED 3012 sidelight has a visibility of 2 NM and a service life of over 50,000 hours.
