Wood care products - wood oil, teak oil and others

What is wood oil?

Wood oil is an oil-based wood preservative that penetrates the pores of the wood, protecting it from moisture, UV radiation and dirt. The main purpose of wood oil is to keep the wood surface flexible, prevent cracking and highlight the natural grain pattern of the wood. Wood oil does not form a shiny or filmy surface, but leaves the wood with a natural feel and breathability.

Wood oil is widely used on various wooden surfaces, such as:

  • On boat interior panels and decorative parts.

  • On patio boards and outdoor furniture.

  • On boat railings, floors and other external wooden parts.

Wood oil helps the boat's wooden surfaces withstand changing weather conditions and wear and tear. Wood oil also prevents the surface from drying out, which is important for wooden materials used outdoors.

What is teak oil?

Teak oil is a wood oil designed for the treatment of teak and other hardwoods. Teak is a popular wood material for boats and is naturally resistant to moisture and rot. However, without teak oil, teak quickly turns gray due to sunlight and weather. Teak oil maintains the beautiful, warm brown color of teak.

Special properties of teak oil:

  • Deep penetration: Teak oil penetrates deep into the teak wood, protecting it from moisture.

  • UV protection: The composition of teak oil often contains substances that protect the wood from the sun's harmful UV radiation.

  • Moisture resistance: Teak oil makes the teak surface water-repellent, protecting the wood from rotting and preserving its structure.

Uses of teak oil:

  • Teak decks and exterior railings on boats.

  • Teak furniture in the boat's exterior and interior.

  • Other outdoor hardwood surfaces, such as handrails and ladders.

What is wood stain?

Wood stain is a wood preservative and finishing agent, the main function of which is to give the wood an even and deep color. Stain emphasizes the natural grain pattern of the wood and brings out the beautiful, warm tone of, for example, mahogany. Unlike wood oils and teak oils, mahogany stain does not protect the wood from moisture or UV radiation, but acts purely as a coloring layer. A stained surface always needs additional protection, for example varnishing or oiling.

Stains are commonly used for the following purposes:

  • On mahogany surfaces on boats: For finishing interior elements, railings and other decorative wood parts.

  • In furniture: For staining furniture and decorative parts in boat interiors.

  • For decorative wooden surfaces: For example, for beautifying decking materials and moldings.

The main function of stain is to bring out the aesthetics of the wood, but it does not provide protection. Therefore, the surface treated with stain should be protected with, for example, varnish, which makes the surface shiny and protects it from moisture.

How are wood care products used?

The correct use of wood care products ensures that wooden surfaces remain beautiful and resistant to time and external stresses, such as moisture, UV radiation and wear. Each product – wood oil, teak oil and wood stain – requires a slightly different treatment method, but the most important thing is good preparation, careful application and finishing.

Use of wood oil

Wood oil is a common choice for protecting exterior and interior wooden surfaces. Using wood oil is simple but requires care.

  1. Surface cleaning :

    • Remove all dirt, grease, loose material and old oil layers.

    • Use detergent and a brush if necessary, especially if the surface has been used outdoors extensively.

    • Sand the surface lightly with fine sandpaper so that the wood oil absorbs evenly into the wood.

  2. Applying wood oil:

    • Use a clean brush, sponge or cloth.

    • Apply the wood oil evenly, following the grain of the wood. Do not apply thick layers, as excess oil can leave a sticky residue on the surface.

    • Use thin layers – several if necessary – to achieve a smooth and protective surface.

  3. Absorption and finishing:

    • Let the wood oil absorb into the wood for about 15–30 minutes.

    • Wipe off any excess wood oil with a dry, clean cloth. This will prevent the oil from drying onto the surface and forming a sticky layer.

    • Allow the surface to dry thoroughly before using or exposing it to moisture.

Using teak oil

Teak oil is specially designed for teak surfaces, which are often exposed to heavy wear and weather conditions. Proper treatment will keep the teak beautiful, protecting it from graying.

  1. Preparation:

    • Clean the teak surface carefully, especially with a teak cleaner that removes dirt, grease and old layers of oil.

    • Allow the surface to dry completely before applying teak oil, as damp wood does not absorb oil effectively.

    • If the surface is grayed or worn, sand it lightly with sandpaper to help the teak oil absorb better.

  2. Applying teak oil:

    • Apply a thin layer of teak oil with a brush, cloth or sponge. Always work with the grain of the wood.

    • Take special care in areas that are most exposed to sun and water.

  3. Absorption and wiping:

    • Let the teak oil absorb for about 10–20 minutes.

    • Wipe off excess teak oil with a clean cloth to make the surface even and smooth.

  4. Repetitions:

    • If the surface is particularly dry or worn, apply a second coat of teak oil after the first coat has dried.

    • Allow the teak oil to dry completely before exposing the surface to water or sunlight.

Using wood stain

Stain is intended for coloring wooden surfaces. Using wood stain requires precision and careful finishing to ensure an even and durable result.

  1. Surface preparation:

    • Clean the surface from dirt and dust.

    • Sand the surface lightly with sandpaper so that the stain absorbs evenly.

    • If you want a very even and uniform finish, use a primer before staining.

  2. Dissemination:

    • Apply the stain in thin layers with a sponge, cloth or brush.

    • Work with the grain of the wood and make sure the stain is spread evenly over the entire surface.

  3. Finish:

    • Remove excess stain with a damp cloth to prevent the surface from becoming patchy.

    • Allow the surface to dry completely before further treatment.

  4. Protection:

    • Stain does not protect the wood from moisture or wear, so apply a varnish or oil to the surface, which will create a protective layer. This will keep the color beautiful and prevent the surface from being damaged.

How often should wood care products be used?

Wood oil:

  • Exterior wood surfaces: 1–2 times a year or whenever the surface looks dry or worn.

  • Interior surfaces: Less frequently, for example every 1–2 years.

Teak oil:

  • Teak decks and exterior surfaces of the boat: 2–3 times a year, especially in areas used in sunlight and humidity.

  • Teak furniture: 1–2 times a year, depending on exposure to weather.

Mahogany stain:

  • The stain itself will last for years, but the protection applied over it, such as varnish, needs to be maintained every 2–5 years, depending on use and conditions.
