Thermal camera, night vision camera or IP camera – what is the difference?

Thermal cameras and thermal binoculars

A thermal camera images the heat radiated by objects, so it does not need visible light. A person, an engine or a warm hull stands out against cold water even in complete darkness. A handheld unit is quick to pick up and works on any boat without installation. A thermal image shows temperature differences rather than real colours, so it tells you where an object is and how large it is, but not the colour of a light.

Night vision camera (SIONYX Nightwave)

According to the manufacturer, SIONYX Nightwave uses a Black Silicon CMOS sensor that delivers a colour image at illumination below 0.001 lux, i.e. in moonless starlight. The camera is mounted permanently and the image is shown on a compatible chartplotter (Garmin, Raymarine, Simrad) or a computer. Colour makes it easier to recognise marks and lights, but a night vision camera does not show an object's heat the way a thermal camera does.

Fixed IP camera (Raymarine CAM300)

Raymarine CAM300 is a compact day and night camera for Axiom chartplotters: a 3 MP sensor (up to 1080p), a 125° × 70° field of view and six 850 nm infrared emitters that illuminate the near field to about 10 metres. It suits monitoring the transom, blind spots and the engine room, and an Axiom display can show up to four CAM300 streams at once. It is not a long-range night navigation camera.

How to choose

Do you need an observation tool or a continuous view?

If you want to check a buoy, a jetty or an object in the water when needed, a handheld thermal camera or thermal binoculars is the quickest solution. If you want to watch your heading continuously from the helm, a fixed night vision camera on the plotter display is a better fit.

Detection range, resolution and field of view

A higher sensor resolution (for example 640 × 512 compared with 384 × 288) shows more detail. A wide field of view, such as the 32° of the FLIR Ocean Scout Pro, suits sweeping an area, and a narrow one, such as the 10.5° of the Lynx LH25 3.0, suits studying a distant object. Optical zoom helps when the target is far away.

Chartplotter compatibility

Fixed cameras are normally connected with an Ethernet cable and PoE power, so check your plotter's brand and model before choosing. According to the manufacturer, SIONYX Nightwave Digital is compatible with Garmin, Raymarine and Simrad systems, and Raymarine CAM300 is designed for Axiom chartplotters. See the plotters under Chartplotters and Raymarine Chartplotters.

A camera does not replace a lookout

The collision regulations require every vessel to keep a proper lookout by sight and hearing (Rule 5; see the Finnish explanation from Suomen Veneilyakatemia). Thermal and night vision cameras improve what you can detect in the dark, but they complement a lookout rather than replace it.

Frequently asked questions

Does a night vision camera need light?

According to the manufacturer, SIONYX Nightwave Digital works in moonless starlight (below 0.001 lux) and does not need white light.

Can a thermal camera record images?

Yes. HIKMICRO Lynx LH25 3.0 records video and photos to 64 GB of storage and transfers them over Wi-Fi to the HIKMICRO Sight app. FLIR Ocean Scout Pro streams video to the FLIR Scout Pro app (iOS) and transfers images and video clips to your phone.

Are the devices waterproof?

FLIR Ocean Scout Pro, HIKMICRO Lynx LH25 3.0 and SIONYX Nightwave are rated IP67, and Raymarine CAM300 is rated IP66. The ratings cover splashes and rain, and an IP67 device also tolerates brief immersion. Raymarine CAM300 can be installed above or below deck.

Does Raymarine CAM300 work with other brands of plotter?

CAM300 is designed for Raymarine Axiom chartplotters. It is ONVIF Profile S compatible, so it can be connected to third-party systems, but check compatibility beforehand.
