Volt and amp meters provide a direct, continuous view of the status of your boat’s electrical system – monitoring the battery voltage tells you the charge status in real time and helps avoid a surprisingly flat battery, while the amp meter shows how much current the charger is producing or consumption is taking from the system.

Wema is a well-known Swedish manufacturer of marine electrical instruments, whose voltmeters are available in both standard 12V models in a black housing and a digital version covering the 8-32V range, which is suitable for multi-voltage systems. Wema also manufactures an ammeter in the ±150A range, which is suitable for monitoring higher charging currents and consumption, and a separate digital operating hour meter for accurate monitoring of engine running time - a useful tool for planning maintenance intervals. The range also includes a combined volt-ammeter for the 6-30V and 0-10A range for smaller systems, and in both black and white housings for different cockpit styles, including a model with a stainless steel rim.

When choosing a meter, it is important to ensure compatibility with the boat's system voltage - most boat systems are 12V, but larger boats and multi-battery systems may also use 24V or varying voltages during charging, in which case a digital meter with a wider measurement range is a safer choice. Regular voltage monitoring helps to detect battery aging or charging system failure in time, before the problem becomes apparent in practice, for example, starting difficulties.

A digital gauge is more accurate than an analog gauge and is often easier to read in bright sunlight, while a traditional needle gauge gives a quick visual overview of the situation without having to interpret the reading in numbers. It is advisable to choose a location for the gauge so that it is easily visible from the steering position without having to take your eyes off navigation for a long time. The hour meter is a particularly useful tool for planning maintenance intervals, as it gives an accurate picture of the engine's actual operating time more reliably than calendar time - two boats that are used differently will need maintenance at different rates even if they were purchased in the same year. The uniform appearance of the Wema gauges across different gauge types makes the entire cockpit instrument cluster a visually unified whole.

A combined volt-amp meter is a good basic choice for a smaller boat where there is no room in the cockpit for separate meters.

A digital gauge is more accurate and often easier to read in bright sunlight than a traditional needle gauge in the cockpit.

Regular voltage monitoring helps detect battery aging or charging system failure early before a major problem occurs.
