Hempel Mille Xtra antifouling paint is an effective solution for protecting the bottom of a sailboat from unwanted organisms. Organisms that stick to the bottom of a boat not only make the boat look untidy, but can also cause problems for the boat's operation. Organisms can interfere with the operation of the propeller and drive system, block the engine's water channels, slow down the boat's speed and increase fuel consumption.

Antifouling paints are a crucial part of boat maintenance, especially in marine areas. Painting not only protects the boat, but also keeps the hull surface smooth. A rough surface increases water resistance, reduces top speed and increases fuel consumption.

The rate of growth varies depending on several factors, such as water temperature, salinity and water purity. Even boats operating under similar conditions can have very different rates of growth, as factors such as sunlight, shade, temperature, water flow and water salinity can affect this.

Mille Xtra paint action

Antifouling paints work by releasing bioactive compounds such as copper oxide and organic biocides. These compounds are water-soluble and inhibit the growth of bottom organisms on the boat. There are three main types of paints: gloss, hard and soft. Hempel Mille Xtra 7166C falls into the gloss category and is a self-polishing, sand-free, copper-based antifouling paint.

Hempel Mille xtra antifouling paint is designed to keep the bottom of your boat clean and free from water friction. It is suitable for all surfaces except aluminium and is used below the waterline. Launching is possible after 24 hours at the earliest, but no later than 6 months. The paint reaches its final colour after approximately one week in the water. The product can be thinned with Thinner 808 and has a coverage of 13 m²/litre.

Hempel's Mille Xtra 7166C provides effective protection for the bottom of a boat, while maintaining boat performance and fuel efficiency. Its self-polishing property reduces the hassle of removing old paint, making it a convenient choice for boaters, as paint layers do not build up as quickly.

Application methods and tools for Hempel Mille Xtra Antifouling

1. Brush usage- Smooth and versatile
Use a high-quality brush, preferably as wide as possible for painting.
Avoid using new, unused brushes when applying the final coat.
Use the cross-draw method to ensure an even result.
Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle, avoiding brush marks.
Wash the brush about every 30 minutes to achieve a clean painting result.

2. Using the roller - Fast and efficient
Choose a short-pile mohair roller for quick painting.
Use felt and foam rollers to achieve a smooth surface.
Always use the cross-pull technique to ensure even application.
Finish with a brush or pad for a high-quality finish.
Wrap masking tape around the roller when you first put a new roller into service to remove any loose fibers.

3. Using a cushion - Smooth result
Use the pad immediately after applying the paint.
Pull the pad only vertically, avoiding paint streaks.

Required actions:
Make sure the surface is clean, grease-free and leveled.
Use Hempel Epoxy Filler/Hempel Profair to fill in cracks and dents. Wash the surface with Hempel Pre-Clean or Hempel Degreaser.
Ensure that the primer surface is intact and that the required thickness of Epoxy Primer (Hempel Light Primer) is applied underneath to ensure a water barrier and prevent fiberglass rot. Hempel Underwater primer can be used as a bonding paint.
Keep the surface sanded and dust-free before painting.
Follow the appropriate painting instructions for different surfaces.

Painting tips:
Pretreat the surface carefully to achieve the best results.
Avoid dust sticking to wet paint by wetting the area under the boat before painting.
Stir the paint thoroughly before use and stir if necessary during painting.
Remove masking tape before the paint dries for neater borders.

Wearable/soft antifoulings: If overcoating wearable or soft antifoulings (or if the previous paint is in poor condition), it is recommended to use Hempel Underwater Primer before applying the antifouling.

Apply an extra layer to the waterline and the leading edge of the keel, as these are where water flow is greatest.

Thinning: Antifouling products are generally not recommended to be thinned. In very cold weather, thinning by 10% may help with application. Thinner 808

Warning: Never dry sand old antifouling paint as the dust it creates can be toxic.

Important:
Keep the space well ventilated and use a respirator if necessary.
Clean up spills immediately.
Do not eat or drink in the painting area.
