Hempel Silic One is an environmentally friendly silicone-based anti-fouling coating for your boat.
Hempel's Silic One is a new silicone-based antifouling coating designed to replace traditional antifouling paints on boats. This non-toxic alternative is significantly more environmentally friendly, based on silicone and hydrogel. The product offers water-like properties, making it difficult for organisms to attach to the boat's surface and to easily detach when the boat is in motion.
Why choose a silicone-based antifouling coating?
Silic One is a biocide-free, anti-fouling method. It forms a non-stick surface without copper, providing durable protection for your boat. The hydrogel is based on unique, non-reactive polymers, creating an invisible sealing layer between the boat hull surface and the water. This prevents fouling from forming because organisms and algae perceive the hull as a liquid and do not try to attach to it as eagerly.
Cleaning and maintenance
Silicone is self-cleaning on fast powerboats, while slow boats and sailboats can be surface cleaned as needed. The surface is easy to clean with a pressure washer and fresh water or a sponge. Maintenance is easy and less expensive than using traditional antifouling paint. Applying a new coating every two years keeps the surface antifouling effective.
Frequently asked questions
- Does Silic One save fuel? - Yes, easy cleanability keeps the friction in the frame low.
- Can Silic One be applied in cool weather? - The minimum temperature is 10°C.
- How sensitive is Silic One to moisture? - Always apply to a dry surface, never wet.
- How soon can a boat be launched after painting with Silic One? - Within 24 hours - 1 month after treatment.
- Can Silic One be applied over old antifouling paint? - Yes, with the help of Silic Seal / Conversion Primer.
- Is Hempel's Silic One removable? - Yes, use Hempel's Silicone Remover.
Safety Considerations
Make sure the lifting straps are properly tied so that they do not slip out of place when raising and lowering the boat.
Applying the Silic One system over old antifouling paint
Switching from a traditional antifouling paint to Hempel's Silic One Fouling Release System is easy using Hempel's Silic Seal / Conversion Primer, a two-component epoxy primer. Below are step-by-step instructions for preparing and applying the Silic One system over an existing, good quality antifouling paint:
1. Preparation of the surface to be treated:
Check the condition of the boat's current antifouling paint using a metal scraper.
Remove loose or poorly adhering layers if the old paint is poorly adhered.
Sand with wet sandpaper until smooth.
Rinse the surface thoroughly with fresh water.
Let the surface dry.
2. Application:
Mix the two components of Silic Seal / Conversion Primer thoroughly, ensuring a uniform consistency. Please note that the viscosity of the product is very low and any spillages must be cleaned up immediately. Thinning is not recommended.
The processing time at 20 °C is 8 hours.
The minimum operating temperature is 5 °C.
3. Layers:
Layer 1: Apply Silic Seal / Conversion Primer.
Layer 2: Apply Silic One Tiecoat.
Silic One Tiecoat must be applied to the entire surface to ensure adhesion.
Layer 3 and 4: Apply two layers of Silic One coating.
4. Launching:
Launching must be done after the last layer.
Time: Minimum 36 hours and maximum 1 month at 10 degrees Celsius. Minimum 24 hours at 20 degrees Celsius.
By following these instructions you will ensure an effective transition from your old antifouling coating to Hempel's Silic One system. Remember to follow the recommended times and temperatures for the best possible results.
Applying the Silic One system to a new boat without epoxy paint
1. Preparation of the surface to be treated
Clean with a suitable detergent and sand with dry sandpaper (P120). Rinse carefully with water. Allow the surface to dry.
Apply 5 coats of Hempel Light Primer, the first coat thinned 20%. Then apply one coat of Silic One Tiecoat. Silic One Tiecoat must be applied to the entire surface to ensure adhesion.
Finally, apply two coats of Silic One paint.
Safety data sheet:
- Silicone-based primer to replace traditional antifouling paint
- Can be painted over antifouling paint with a primer
- Thinner - Do not thin
- Lasts two seasons
- Biocide-free
- Easy to clean
- A short-pile or felt roller is the right choice for applying primer and topcoat.
- Coverage 10m 2 /L

Hempel Hard Racing Antifouling paint
A hard, antifouling paint specifically designed for fast motorboats, racing sailboats and trailer boats. Hard racing paint provides effective protection on the bottom of the boat for the entire season.
Excellent performance
Hempel Hard Racing antifouling can be sanded to a very smooth finish, which improves the boat's hydrodynamic efficiency and allows for the lowest possible friction in the water. Its hard texture makes it particularly suitable for fast boats where a durable and effective antifouling paint is required.
Versatile use
This antifouling paint is suitable for all surfaces except aluminium. It is used below the waterline and can be applied to fibreglass, wood, plywood and steel boats. However, do not use the paint on aluminium boats or other light metals as direct contact may cause corrosion to the boat hull.
Launching and final tone
Hempel Hard Racing Antifouling allows launching as early as 24 hours but no later than 6 months after painting. This gives you flexibility in renovating your boat. The paint reaches its final shade within a week of being in the water, ensuring not only protection but also an aesthetic finish.
Hard antifouling paints
Hard antifouling paints have a high content of insoluble resin on the surface, which makes it hard and not
become brittle. The resin contains active ingredients, and their particles are so close together that as one dissolves, the next is exposed. The hardness and durability of these antifouling products make them ideal for fast
for boats, beached boats and racing sailboats (antifouling paint can be polished before launching
with wet sandpaper).
Antifouling paint painting
Hempel Light Primer -> Hempel Underwater Primer -> Hempel Hard Racing:
Good adhesion/protection, easier maintenance painting, cost savings in the long run, especially suitable when painting the entire system on new boats. Advantages: During seasonal maintenance painting, when/if the antifouling has worn off, a new coat can be painted directly over Hempel's Underwater Primer. When the old paint has been completely removed or the boat has never been painted before, 4x Hempel Light primer coats and 1x Hempel Underwater coat should be applied to the bottom. Light Primer is a 2-component paint that prevents water from entering the boat's hull. This prevents problems such as fiberglass rot. The Underwater paint coat ensures that the antifouling paint adheres to the bottom. 2-K paints become very hard and slippery when they dry, where some paints do not adhere well.
Alternative system:
Hempel Light Primer -> Hempel Hard Racing:
Faster to paint, possibility to spot paint epoxy. Antifouling should be applied while Hempel's Light Primer is still tacky/leathery. Disadvantage: During seasonal maintenance painting, when/if the antifouling has worn off, a new coat of Hempel's Light Primer should be applied to ensure adhesion

Removing old paint and antifouling is easy with Hempel's Paint Stripper, an effective solvent-based paint stripper that can be used on most painted and varnished surfaces.
You can estimate the time it will take to complete the job by first trying it out on a small area.
- Apply Hempel's Paint Stripper liberally to the dry surface using a brush or roller.
- Be careful when using the product on plastic surfaces (it may damage some thermoplastics, e.g. ABS).
- Do not work on too large an area at a time.

Choose Hempel Hard Racing Antifouling and give your boat top-notch protection and a competitive edge on the water. Its high-quality formulation, easy application and long-lasting durability make this antifouling paint the choice to enhance your boat's performance and appearance.
Hard antifouling paints
Hard antifouling paints have a high content of insoluble resin on the surface, which makes it hard and not
become brittle. The resin contains active ingredients, and their particles are so close together that as one dissolves, the next is exposed. The hardness and durability of these antifouling products make them ideal for fast boats, beach boats and racing sailboats (the antifouling paint can be polished before launching).
with wet sandpaper).

Hempel's Light Primer / Hempel's Underwater Primer / Hempel's Antifouling:
Good adhesion/protection, easier maintenance painting, cost savings in the long run, especially suitable when painting the entire system on new boats. Advantages: In seasonal maintenance painting, when/if the antifouling has worn off, a new coat can be painted directly over Hempel's Underwater Primer
Alternative system:
Hempel's Light Primer / Hempel's Antifouling:
Faster to paint, possibility of spot painting epoxy. Antifouling must be painted when Hempel's
Light Primer is still sticky/leathery. Disadvantage: During seasonal maintenance painting when/if the antifouling has worn off
off, a new coat of Hempel's Light Primer must be applied to ensure adhesion.
