A zinc anode protects the iron and other metal parts of a boat from corrosion. The anode is installed below the waterline on the metal parts that you want to protect.
Corrosion occurs electrochemically . When different metals are in contact with each other, they form an electrical battery: the metals act as the terminals of the battery and the water acts as the conductor. In this combination , the baser metal always corrodes first . Zinc is a baser metal than iron, stainless steel, copper, brass, etc., and therefore protects these structures from corrosion.
Zinc anodes should be inspected every time the boat is lifted and replaced immediately if they are clearly worn. The anode is installed longitudinally in connection with the metal part to be protected .
Note: The zinc anode must not be painted with boat primer, as the paint will prevent its function.
