Replace sacrificial anodes in a timely manner to keep them protected against corrosion. Sacrificial anodes are made of a baser metal than the drive gear, and therefore they will start to corrode first. This way you protect your boat from the harsh effects of water. Nowadays, the anode is usually replaced when about half of the material has corroded.
