Harken 22mm rails are the aluminium profile that the 22mm series of carriages run along — this group covers the rail and its end pieces, not the carriages themselves (see Harken 22mm carriages separately). The range includes both low and high profile rail end pieces, both in basic and reinforced Heavy Duty versions, and the rail itself is available in a range of lengths from 600mm to 1.2m.
The low rail is suitable for situations where installation height is limited or the deck profile is low, while the high rail raises the carriage slightly above the deck surface, which can make it easier to route the ropes from the carriage forward. Heavy Duty end pieces are designed for higher loads and larger boats where the stress on the genoa carriage or carrier carriage is significantly greater than usual.
The choice of rail length depends on the needs of the trimming area — a longer rail allows a wider range of adjustment for the carriage position, which is useful in different wind conditions and sail combinations. The end pieces prevent the carriage from slipping off the end of the rail and often serve as an attachment point for the trim line.
The compatibility of the rail and end pieces must be checked carefully before installation — low and high profile rails require their own end pieces and are not interchangeable, even if both are from the 22 mm series. The choice of Heavy Duty end pieces is recommended whenever the load passing through the carriage is significant, such as in a genoa carriage on a larger boat — regular end pieces can fatigue in the long term from repeated impact loading if the carriage hits the end piece at full speed during a hard turn. The choice of rail length directly affects the extent of the trimming range: a longer rail allows the carriage to be moved over a wider area according to different wind angles, which is especially useful in racing, where the optimal carriage position constantly changes depending on the direction and strength of the wind. The tightness of the rail mounting screws should be checked regularly, as repeated vibration and loading can loosen the fastening over time, which reduces the reliability of the entire system.
It is advisable to keep the rail surface clean of sand and salt so that the carriage moves smoothly and does not wear out prematurely in a dirty track.
The compatibility of the rail and carriage must always be checked before ordering so that the entire trim system works seamlessly.
Regular maintenance and cleaning of the rail system ensures smooth trimming throughout the sailing season without unexpected jamming.
