Lifebuoys and Throw Lines

A lifebuoy is a lifesaving device used in emergencies. It is thrown to a person in the water in a man-overboard situation who is trying to stay afloat.

Lifebuoy

A wide range of lifebuoys for all boats and docks. Lifebuoys are usually brightly coloured and made of buoyant materials such as plastic, cork or foam. They often have a rope attached to them so that they can be pulled to safety. Models have been developed over the years in different shapes. The traditional round model has been replaced by other options such as the horseshoe , man-overboard system and rescue sling .

Lifebuoys can be equipped with a fixed rope and, for example, reflectors to help find someone in the water in the dark. Check out the Man Overboard guide .

Types and models of lifebuoys

  1. Traditional lifebuoy

    • Shape : Usually round or slightly oval, with a hole in the middle.
    • Material : Often made of thermoplastic or similar buoyant material.
    • Intended use : A general purpose lifebuoy used in a wide range of water areas. Suitable for both coastal and inland waters.
  2. Lifebuoy with throwing line

    • Shape : Traditional lifebuoy with a tow rope attached.
    • Material : Thermoplastic, polyethylene or similar.
    • Intended use : Effective in rescue situations where you want to throw a lifebuoy from the shore or a boat to someone in the water. The throw line can be used to pull the lifebuoy back to the person being rescued, making the rescue easier.
  3. Torpedo lifebuoy

    • Shape : An elongated, torpedo-shaped lifebuoy.
    • Material : Light and buoyant material, such as polyethylene or polyurethane.
    • Intended use : Especially at swimming pools and beaches where lifeguards are present. Very suitable for quick and efficient rescue operations because it is aerodynamic and easy to throw even over long distances.
  4. Horseshoe lifebuoy

    • Shape : Horseshoe-shaped.
    • Material : Often a soft and buoyant foam material that is coated for durability.
    • Intended use : Typically used on boats and sailboats. Easy to throw and provide support to a person in the water. The horseshoe shape makes it easy to place around the person in the water.
  5. Self-inflating lifebuoy

    • Format : In a package that automatically fills with water.
    • Material : Durable fabric or plastic that is filled with a CO2 cartridge.
    • Intended use : Especially suitable for boats and ships where space is limited. Easy to store and use in an emergency.

Uses of lifebuoys

  • Boating and Sailing : Lifebuoys are kept on boats and sailboats for emergencies. They are easily accessible and quickly deployed if someone falls into the water.

  • Beaches and swimming areas : On beaches and swimming areas, lifebuoys are an important part of safety equipment. They allow for quick assistance if a swimmer gets into trouble.

  • Ports and piers : In ports and piers, lifebuoys are placed in easily accessible locations so that they are available in an emergency.

  • Swimming pools : In swimming pools, lifebuoys, especially torpedo-shaped ones, are used to provide quick assistance if someone encounters a drowning situation.

  • Emergencies : Lifebuoys are essential equipment in any emergency situation where someone is in the water. They provide emergency assistance and help maintain the person's survival until rescue arrives.

Lifebuoys are a critical part of water safety and their correct use can save lives. When choosing them, it is important to consider the intended use and environment to ensure that the equipment is as effective and fit for its intended purpose as possible.
