The riser pieces raise the angle of entry of the crab lock rope so that the rope passes through the lock at an optimal angle and does not cause unnecessary friction or premature wear. Harken's range includes the crab lock wedge (H145), the Micro series straight riser (H293) and 15 degree riser (H294), the regular size straight riser (H295) and 15 degree riser (H296), and the entire Micro series riser range (H297). In addition, the range includes the Clamcleat plastic washer for the same purpose.
The correct angle of entry is crucial for the operation of a crab lock — if the rope enters the lock at too steep or too gentle an angle, the lock will not grip the rope reliably or the rope will wear unevenly at the teeth. The riser increases the angle of the lock's engagement relative to the direction of the rope's entry, allowing the rope to meet the jaws of the lock in the correct position.
A 15-degree riser is suitable for situations where the rope comes in at an angle from below, while a straight riser raises the lock evenly without changing the angle — the choice depends on the rope routing to the lock. The Micro series parts are sized specifically to be compatible with Harken's Micro crab locks and will not fit larger lock models.
The correct angle of the riser piece directly affects the grip of the crab lock — if the rope enters the lock at the wrong angle, it can slip through under load just when the lock is needed most, which is a safety risk, especially in high winds. The Micro series risers are precisely dimensioned to be compatible only with Harken's own Micro crab locks, and will not fit larger or other manufacturer's lock models, even if they appear to be the same size at first glance. When installing, it is worth testing the passage of the rope through the lock at different load levels before final attachment, so that the angle of the riser can be adjusted to optimize your own rope routing if necessary. The full set (H297) is a convenient choice if the boat has several crab locks with different rope entry angles — purchasing individual riser pieces separately can be more expensive if several locks need adjustment.
It is worth checking the tightness of the riser piece's mounting screws regularly, as repeated loading can loosen a small fastener over time without you noticing.
The correct choice of the extension piece significantly improves the operational reliability of the crab lock and at the same time extends the service life of the rope.
It is always a good idea to check the compatibility of the riser pieces with your crab lock model before ordering to avoid purchasing the wrong part.
Riser blocks are a small but significant part of a functional and long-lasting rope lock system.
A small part has a surprisingly large impact on the operation of the entire rope system.
