Mercury Genuine Trim Rod and Anode . This trim rod fits Mercury and Mariner 40-60 EFI engines with a small gear case ( 1.83:1 ratio), as well as some older 40-75 hp engines .
The trim tab corrects the torque caused by the propeller and also acts as a sacrificial anode . Replace sacrificial anodes in a timely manner to ensure that the engine's corrosion protection remains effective. Sacrificial anodes are made of a baser metal than the engine, which is why they corrode first, thus protecting the engine from the harmful effects of water. A general rule of thumb is to replace the anode when about half of the material has worn away .
Since the trim tab also has a guiding function, it must always be intact .
