Boat repair materials

Boat repair materials are products designed for boat maintenance and repair, used to repair and protect damage to various materials, such as fiberglass, wood, metal and plastic. Repair materials are needed when you want to repair, improve or protect the structure of a boat. The most popular boat repair materials include fiberglass putty, fiberglass putty and fiberglass mat, as well as various adhesives and coatings. Check out our selection!

What is fiberglass putty?

Fiberglass putty is a repair compound that strengthens and smooths damaged surfaces on a boat (especially fiberglass structures). Fiberglass putty usually consists of a polyester-based resin that is reinforced with fine glass fiber particles. The reinforcement makes the fiberglass putty extremely durable, waterproof and adheres to various surfaces, such as fiberglass, wood, metal and concrete.

Features of fiberglass putty

  • Strength and durability:
Fiberglass particles give fiberglass putty strength, making it suitable for structural repairs.

  • Waterproofness:
Fiberglass putty is moisture resistant and is therefore an ideal choice for repairing boat hulls and other parts exposed to moisture.

  • Quick drying:
Fiberglass putty hardens quickly, especially after adding hardener.

  • Easy styling and finishing:
After hardening, the fiberglass putty is easy to sand and shape smooth, allowing it to blend well with the original structure.

How is fiberglass packing used ?

1. Surface preparation:

  • Clean the damaged area thoroughly of grease, dirt and loose material.

  • Sand the surface lightly to ensure the fiberglass putty adheres properly. Use sandpaper or a sander.

2. Mixing the fiberglass putty:

  • Mix the fiberglass putty and hardener in the ratio according to the instructions on the package.

  • Work quickly, as the hardening process begins immediately after mixing.

3. Application:

  • Spread the fiberglass putty evenly over the damaged area with a spatula or spreading tool.

  • Shape and smooth the fiberglass putty as well as possible to reduce the need for sanding later.

4. Hardening:

  • Allow the fiberglass putty to dry completely before further processing. Drying time varies depending on the amount of hardener and ambient temperature, but is usually around 15–30 minutes.

5. Sanding and finishing:

  • Sand the hardened fiberglass mat smooth with fine sandpaper.

  • Finish the surface with paint, varnish or gelcoat to blend in with the surrounding structure.

Where is fiberglass packing used?

  1. Boat hull repairs:

    • Repairing cracks, scratches and holes in fiberglass frames.

  2. Car and vehicle repairs:

    • Suitable for repairing fiberglass parts and other damage to car bodies, for example.

  3. Industrial and construction applications:

    • Can be used to reinforce and level various fiberglass and composite structures.

Fiberglass putty is a versatile and durable repair material that is ideal for repairing boats, cars and other fiberglass structures. Fiberglass putty's easy application, fast drying and excellent adhesion make it a popular choice for both amateur and professional use. With regular maintenance and proper use, fiberglass putty restores damaged surfaces to their original condition, extending the life of structures and improving their aesthetics.

What is fiberglass putty?

Fiberglass putty is a boat repair compound specifically designed for repairing and smoothing damage to fiberglass surfaces and structures. Fiberglass putty is usually composed of a polyester-based resin with added fillers and sometimes fine fiberglass particles, but often less than in fiberglass putties. Fiberglass putty is commonly used to repair damage to boats, cars, vehicles, and other fiberglass structures.

The properties of fiberglass putty make it easy to apply and work with, making it suitable for both structural and aesthetic repairs. Once cured, fiberglass putty is hard, durable and easy to sand, allowing for a smooth and finished finish.

Where is fiberglass putty used?

1. Boat repair

Fiberglass putty is commonly used to repair damage to boat hulls, decks, and other fiberglass surfaces, such as scratches, cracks, and small holes. Fiberglass putty is also suitable for smoothing the surface after larger repairs.

2. Car and vehicle repairs

Cracks and damage to fiberglass parts of cars, such as bumpers and panels, can be repaired with fiberglass putty. It also acts as a smoothing layer before painting, after the damage has first been repaired with putty or other repair material.

3. Leveling and finishing

Fiberglass putty is an excellent finishing product. It smooths out unevenness and small dents after repair and prepares the surface for painting or varnishing.

Advantages of fiberglass putty

  • Easy to apply and work with:
Fiberglass putty is easy to shape and sand, making it user-friendly even for beginners.

  • Durable and waterproof:
Cured fiberglass putty is resistant to moisture and is therefore a great choice for boaters.

  • Versatile use:
Fiberglass putty is suitable for both small damages and larger repair projects where a smooth and durable surface is needed.

Fiberglass putty is a versatile and easy-to-use boat repair material, especially suitable for repairing and smoothing damage to fiberglass structures. Fiberglass putty is widely used in boats, cars and industrial applications to repair cracks, holes and other damage. Fiberglass putty is an excellent choice when a durable, waterproof and finished-looking repair is needed.

What is fiberglass mat?

Fiberglass mat is a boat repair material consisting of randomly arranged and bonded fiberglass strands. Fiberglass mat is commonly used in the manufacture and repair of fiberglass structures in conjunction with resins such as polyester or epoxy resin. When impregnated with resin, fiberglass mat forms a strong, durable and waterproof structure.

Fiberglass mat is available in different thicknesses and densities, allowing it to be used in a variety of projects. Fiberglass mat is easy to shape, so it can also be used on irregular or complex surfaces.

How is fiberglass mat used?

1. Surface preparation

  • Clean and sand the surface to be repaired or coated to ensure proper adhesion of the resin and fiberglass mat.

  • Remove all grease, dirt and old surface layers.

2. Cutting fiberglass mat

  • Cut the fiberglass mat into pieces of appropriate size. It is important that the pieces cover the area to be repaired, extending slightly beyond the edges.

3. Resin preparation

  • Prepare the resin and hardener according to the package instructions. Polyester resin is the most common resin used with fiberglass mat, but epoxy resin can also be used for more demanding repairs.

4. Applying and impregnating the fiberglass mat

  • Apply a layer of resin to the surface to be repaired.

  • Place the fiberglass mat on top of the resin and saturate it with a brush or roller until the mat is completely translucent.

  • Remove any air bubbles using a spatula or roller.

5. Adding layers

  • You can add multiple layers of fiberglass mat and resin if you want a stronger structure. Allow each layer to fully absorb before adding the next.

6. Hardening

  • Allow the resin to cure completely. Drying time depends on the type of resin used and the ambient temperature, but is usually around 24–48 hours.

7. Finishing

  • Sand the hardened surface smooth and, if necessary, apply gelcoat or paint to protect the surface.

Where is fiberglass mat used?

  1. Boat repair

    • Fiberglass mats are used to strengthen and repair boat hulls, decks and other structures. Fiberglass mats are also suitable for repairing cracks, holes and worn surfaces.

  2. Car and vehicle repairs

    • Fiberglass mats are used to repair and strengthen fiberglass-based bodies and other parts.

  3. In construction and industry

    • Fiberglass mats are suitable for the manufacture and maintenance of tanks, pools and other fiberglass structures.

  4. For home and DIY projects

    • Fiberglass mats can be used, for example, in the manufacture of fiberglass composites, such as furniture or decorative objects.

Fiberglass mat is an essential material for repairing and reinforcing fiberglass structures. Its use in conjunction with resin creates a durable and waterproof structure that is especially suitable for boat repairs. When used correctly, fiberglass mat restores the original strength and appearance of the surface and structure, making it a versatile and valuable material for all fiberglass projects.
