Anodes, often called sacrificial metals, are metal parts used to protect other metals on a boat from corrosion. Anodes are also commonly referred to as zinc, as zinc is the most commonly used anode material in Finland. Corrosion is a natural process in which metals are gradually destroyed by chemical reactions in the environment. This can cause serious damage to important parts of a boat, such as the engine, propeller and other metal components. By installing anodes, these parts are protected because the anodes corrode instead of other metal parts.
Different types of anodes protect the boat and their choice depends on the environment in which the boat will be used. The most common are zinc, aluminum and magnesium anodes:
Anodes must be replaced regularly to ensure effective corrosion protection. It is recommended to check at least once a year. If the anode is more than 50% worn, it must be replaced. Fresh anodes are crucial in protecting the metal parts of the boat.
The choice of anode depends on the water you are using. Zinc anodes are the best solution for saltwater, aluminum anodes are suitable for brackish water, and magnesium anodes provide the best protection for freshwater environments.
MARINEKAUPPA offers a wide range of high-quality anodes designed to protect your boat's components, such as the rudder, propeller and engine, from corrosion.
